A simple Bayes factor for testing measurement-theoretic axioms

چکیده

A lot of models used to represent preferences or other relations have been characterized in the framework of measurement theory. To assess the empirical validity of one of these models, we can either test the model itself or test the axioms characterizing it. When a model is rejected, the latter approach has the advantage of indicating why it is rejected. The available statistical techniques for testing measurementtheoretic axioms are complex and not always satisficing. In this paper, we present a new statistical technique based on a Bayes factor, very simple and flexible.

Can Bayes' Rule Be Justified by Cognitive Rationality Principles

The justification of Bayes' rule by cognitive rationality principles is undertaken by extending the propositional axiom systems usually proposed in two contexts of belief change: revising and updating. Probabilistic belief change axioms are introduced, either by direct transcription of the set-theoretic ones, or in a stronger way nevertheless in the spirit of the underlying propositional princi...

Belief revision generalized: A joint characterization of Bayes' and Jeffrey's rules

We present a general framework for representing belief-revision rules and use it to characterize Bayes’s rule as a classical example and Je¤rey’s rule as a non-classical one. In Je¤rey’s rule, the input to a belief revision is not simply the information that some event has occurred, as in Bayes’s rule, but a new assignment of probabilities to some events. Despite their di¤erences, Bayes’s and J...

An empirical test of some measurement-theoretic axioms for fuzzy sets

In the previous years some authors have been elaborating on the measurementtheoretic foundations of fuzzy set theory. A well-known problem in this approach is the difficult applicability of the deterministically formulated axioms on data obtained from an expert (or social science data in general). In this paper a statistical method is proposed which can be used for the testing of measurement ax...

A Bayesian Decision-Theoretic Approach to Logically-Consistent Hypothesis Testing

This work addresses an important issue regarding the performance of simultaneous test procedures: the construction of multiple tests that at the same time are optimal from a statistical perspective and that also yield logically-consistent results that are easy to communicate to practitioners of statistical methods. For instance, if hypothesis A implies hypothesis B, is it possible to create opt...
